Readington and Clinton Township are both strong choices for families in Hunterdon County, and the right one depends on how you live. Readington has a train station in Whitehouse Station and sends high schoolers to Hunterdon Central. Clinton Township sits next to Round Valley Reservoir and sends high schoolers to North Hunterdon. Both have their own K-8 school districts and easy access to I-78.
Here's how they compare on the things families ask me about most.

Readington Township: best for commuters who want options
Readington is really a group of villages. Whitehouse Station is the best known, with its train station and a mix of older homes and newer neighborhoods. Readington students attend Hunterdon Central, one of the larger high schools in the area, which serves several towns in central Hunterdon.
Readington has also been one of Team McLain's most active towns. You can see one recent example in our Lake Cushetunk sale. For the full picture, here's my Readington Township guide.
Clinton Township: best for families who want space and the outdoors
Clinton Township wraps around the small, historic Town of Clinton, with its famous Red Mill on the Raritan River. Many homes sit on wooded lots, and Round Valley Reservoir is close by for hiking, fishing and swimming in summer. High schoolers attend North Hunterdon High School in Annandale.
Here's my Clinton area guide with more on the neighborhoods.
Property taxes in Readington and Clinton Township
Taxes vary by assessment, so the only accurate number is the one for a specific house. Before you make an offer, I pull the current tax bill for the home and compare it with similar homes in each town. You can also compare each town's general tax rate on the NJ Division of Taxation site.
Who each town fits best
- Choose Readington if a train station in town matters, you like the idea of a village with its own character, or you want Hunterdon Central.
- Choose Clinton Township if you want more wooded space, Round Valley nearby and the North Hunterdon schools.
- Not sure? Spend a Saturday in each. Have breakfast in Whitehouse Station and lunch in downtown Clinton, and you'll feel the difference.
