Moving From NYC to Hunterdon County: Commute, Costs, Towns

Moving from NYC to Hunterdon County gets you more space, more land and a slower pace, but it changes your commute. NJ Transit's Raritan Valley Line runs through northern Hunterdon. Some off-peak trains run directly to New York Penn Station, while most rush-hour riders change trains at Newark Penn. Plan your town choice around how often you'll actually go into the city.

How the commute really works

The Raritan Valley Line is the main rail link. Here's what to know before you buy:

  • Direct trains are limited. One-seat rides to New York Penn run on off-peak trains. Most peak trains end at Newark Penn, where you transfer.
  • Western stations have less service. White House station in Whitehouse Station gets weekday peak trains only. Stations closer to Raritan and Somerville get more.
  • Most people drive locally. Even train commuters usually drive to the station, and I-78 is the main road east.

If you'll go into the city every day, focus on towns close to a station. If it's two or three days a week, your options open up a lot.

A simple plan for your move

  1. Decide your city days. Daily, a few days a week, or rarely. It narrows your towns more than anything else.
  2. Get pre-approved. At 7.40%, small rate changes move your budget.
  3. Visit on a weekday. Drive to the station at rush hour once before you buy.
  4. Plan inspections early. Wells, septic and oil tanks are common outside town centers.
